Lake Whelchel
Lake Whelchel is a lakeside loop in Gaffney, about half an hour up I-85 from Spartanburg. The main trail circles the lake for about 7.5 miles, and the Paul's Peninsula extension, opened in May 2025, adds roughly 2.5 more. The trail is part of the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail and the Carolina Thread Trail, so you will share it with hikers and dog walkers.
What to expect
Flowy, mostly moderate singletrack on hard-packed clay, with a little over 300 feet of climbing around the loop and one short, steep climb on the west side. Expect plenty of boardwalks and wooden bridges, which get slick when wet. It is a good next step for riders who are comfortable at Holston Creek or Duncan Park and want a longer ride.
Trailhead & parking
The main parking area is at 198 Concord Rd, Gaffney, SC 29341. There is also a lot at the boat landing (gated, closes at 7 PM) and a newer trailhead on Pleasant School Rd. The trail is open dawn to dusk and is free. Dogs are welcome on a leash; swimming and wading are not allowed. Get directions.
